Michèle Mouton: Queen of the Mountain

We have to go back to the 1985 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The challenge was monumental: a relentless climb to the summit at over 4,300 meters of altitude, where oxygen is scarce for both lungs and engines, and where a single mistake on the gravel would send you straight into the abyss. One of the most legendary and oldest races (held since 1916) in American motorsport.

There, Michèle Mouton made history. At the wheel of the wild Audi Sport Quattro S1, the Frenchwoman not only tamed the mountain but also shattered the clock, setting a new absolute record of 11:25.39. With this victory, Mouton was crowned the "Queen of the Mountain," becoming the first and only woman to win the overall title of the event.

A milestone, not only in the history of motorsport, but in sport in general, as it should not be forgotten that the world of motorsport is one of the few in which men and women compete under the same conditions.

That triumph was a game-changer, demonstrating her technique and worth to the world, and the immense and brutal power of her Audi Quattro. A milestone that also marked the beginning of an era of absolute European dominance in an event that until then belonged to local specialists.
