The most exciting boredom in the world
Formula 1 is often accused of being boring, predictable, and lacking in excitement… The results are so foreseeable that betting on a Max Verstappen win in 2023 is as safe as investing in government bonds.
And then, of course, there’s the FIA–Pirelli–Liberty Media trio and their endless “innovations,” which do little — if anything — to improve the spectacle. I’m sure you’ll agree with me that the FIA’s recent decisions on safety and sporting regulations, “Piedrelli’s” latest tyre constructions, or Liberty’s opening ceremonies that look more like the Super Bowl than a motorsport event, have done nothing to enhance the competition of the “little colorful cars.”
And yet, sometimes the planets align and, against all odds — whether by the whim of the racing gods, sheer randomness, the leniency of the stewards, or all of the above — a truly epic race happens. A jaw-dropping spectacle that creates new fans. A few hours of madness where the car matters less and raw talent and courage take center stage. Races where risk, drama, bravery, grit, passion, and adrenaline all come together. Races in which Formula 1 becomes not just the most thrilling sport in the world, but the most electrifying spectacle on Earth. Because there must be something about speed — after all, since the days of chariot racing, mankind has been enchanted by it.
And it’s precisely after very good, but “ordinary,” Grands Prix like the recent Italian GP that we must not forget the gift from the heavens that was Zandvoort — the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix.
For those of us who love this fascinating sport, we know the wait is worth it. As we look ahead to the next legendary race (Singapore, perhaps?), we’ll keep waiting…
And in the meantime — will you turn off the TV?
